If only you were on your homeowner’s association board, everything would be perfect, right?

Find yourself saying that a lot? Maybe it’s your time. Landscaping for HOAs is one of Greenscape’s specialties, and we know what it takes to succeed as a board member.

Do you have what it takes to be a good HOA board member? Let’s find out.

First: Are You Sure You Want This?

Don’t run just because people say you should. Do it because you truly want to. Board service requires real commitment, and in self-managed HOAs without a property manager, the time involved can be significant.

Do Some Serious Reading

This is no time to skim the HOA governing documents.

You need to know the ins, outs, and fine details of your HOA rules and regulations better than anyone else.

Set aside plenty of time to really read and digest this document. If you don’t understand it, you can’t explain it to others or fairly enforce the rules.

Show Up

Don’t skip HOA board meetings. It’s the best way to be informed — and to be visible.

Ask questions, share ideas, and make sure residents know you’re engaged.

Meet And Greet

Don’t pass up a chance to say, “Hey, neighbor.” People are more likely to support you if they know you personally.

Ask about their concerns and wishes, so they know you’ll represent them well.

Go Ahead — Ask For Votes

People need to know you’re running.

Before ballots go out, connect with neighbors to ask for their votes. Share a short note explaining why you’re right for the role — and what you hope to accomplish.

Share The Concerns You Want To Address

Like running for class president back in the day, people want to know what you’ll do if elected.

Point out specific issues you’d like to improve. Chances are, other residents feel the same way — and will appreciate that someone is ready to tackle them.

More Reading (Sorry)

Be sure to review your association’s contracts with property management companies, landscaping providers, and other vendors.

When questions come up, being informed goes a long way in building trust.

Are You Really Cut Out For This?

A successful HOA board member has certain qualities. Do you see yourself here?

  • Be Approachable — You’re the eyes and ears of the community.
  • Look Out For Others — Decisions should benefit the entire neighborhood, not just your own property.
  • Have Thick Skin — Not everyone will agree with your decisions.
  • Have a Clear Direction — Know what you want to accomplish and communicate clearly with vendors.
  • Be Reasonable — Understand the challenges of your community to make fair decisions.
  • Take Action — Stay focused in meetings, follow the agenda, and make decisions to keep things moving.
  • Don’t Fear Pushback — Decisions won’t always please everyone, but honesty and transparency build respect.
